Ukwenza
Ukwenza Clothing is a Black Economic Empowerment Initiative of GRW Engineering, and is situated in Worcester. The aim was that Ukwenza (which means, “to make”), should make specialized, heavy duty work wear for GRW. The project was launched on 04.08.08, with 12 workers, with Mercia du Toit as the General manager.
As the word spread, the need for other industrial type of work wear became apparent, and the range was expanded to dustcoats, wrap coats, chef’s jackets, cleaner’s tunics, different kinds of aprons and bandannas. Today, they also manufacture t-shirts, golf shirts, body warmers and polar fleece tops.
Ukwenza is proud to state that their attention to detail and the excellent quality of the products that they manufacture, differentiates them from the rest. They are also very proud of the fact that they are truly home-grown, and only employ workers from the local community.
Ukwenza is planning to diversify and grow in the next year to a much bigger organization with more work opportunities for the local community.
